Entrance to Higashi Hongan-ji

Main Building of Higashi Hongan-ji

Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu founded this temple in 1602. It was rebuilt in 1895 after a series of fires. Inside is a 13-th century statue of Amida Nyorai (Buddha of the Western Paradise) which I'll get a picture of later. This temple is the headquarters of the Otani branch of Jodo Shin-shu (a Buddhist sect). (Info from my Lonely Planet guide on Kyoto.)

East Building Kyoto Station

There's a lot of controversy over Kyoto Station. It was built in recent years. It's enormously tall and modern, but a lot of Kyotoites complained that it would ruin the skyline of the city. However, once the Japanese government decides to do something, especially in construction, there's no stopping it. Construction Ministry officials are hired by construction companies when they retire, so they give tons of money to the companies to build unnecessary buildings, highways, dams, etc. Anyway, this building holds a hotel.
